The term pub is derived from the full name public house (a bar) and a gastropub is a pub where you can have a meal a step above the typical pub grub. Whereas typical pub grub includes simple fare such as burgers, fried fish and chips usually designed to serve as a base for copious amounts of alcohol, a gastropub takes its food a bit more seriously. You can expect to find items on the menu which include a greater level of preparation and technique and a heavier focus on presentation. Of course the menu selection is frequently designed to complement the offer of beers and wines available at the pub.
