Molly Malone

Molly Malone (also known as "Cockles and Mussels") is a typical Irish song which could be argued to be the unofficial anthem of Dublin . The song tells the tale of a beautiful fishmonger who plied her trade on the streets of Dublin , but died young of a fever. She has been argued to be either a chaste figure or a prostitute by night after vending wares on the street by day. There is a statue of Molly by Jeanne Rynhart on Grafton Street in the commercial area of Dublin , to celebrate city's first millennium in 1987. Typical of the clever Irish and their sharp wit, this statue is locally referred to as the “Tart with the Cart” or the “Dish with the Fish” and even ”The Trollop with the Scallops”.
